In The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915), the best-known of his thrillers (made into a popular movie by Alfred Hitchcock), John Buchan introduces his most enduring hero, Richard Hannay, who, despite claiming to be an "ordinary fellow," is caught up in the dramatic and dangerous race against a plot todevastate the British war effort.another longer version:The Thirty-Nine Steps (1935) Jonathan L. Bowen Richard Hannay (Robert Donat), who is visiting London from Canada, meets another foreigner, beautiful Annabella Smith (Lucie Mannheim), who comes with Richard back to his flat and tells him that foreign agents, members of an organization called the Thirty-Nine Steps, are pursuing her with the intention to kill her. He is intrigued with her story, but has no reason to believe her. When he sees men outside of his window he begins to understand, however. She claims to be a secret agent trying to stop another ruthless spy from giving top secret information out of England. In the middle of the night, Annabella struggles into the living room and wakes Richard, who quickly learns she has a knife in her back. She dies, but not before she has told him about her plans to go to Scotland for reasons she does not reveal. Richard, with convincing reasons by now to believe Annabella's story, takes the mission himself and intends to find whoever she wanted to meet in Scotland, but first he has to find a way to escape from his apartment. When he succeeds, not surprisingly, authorities quickly suspect him of murder, so he becomes both the pursuer of a secret agent and the pursued. He eventually meets the man responsible for smuggling the secret information out of England, though he also becomes entangled with Pamela (Madeleine Carroll), who does not initially believe his story and even turns him in to authorities, but he eventually convinces her. The two have to evade capture both by authorities and by Professor Jordan (Godfrey Tearle) and his men, though Jordan is not a professor at all, but rather a member of the Thirty-Nine Steps. The Thirty-Nine Steps, Alfred Hitchcock's eighteenth film, is also one of his first true masterpieces, made while the director still worked in the U.K. The movie has a lot of the classic themes that have made Hitchcock such a famous and appealing director of suspense films. The idea of a pursued pursuer, such as Richard, is common in his movies, where the protagonist is often pursuing another character while at the same time trying to flee from capture himself, such as in North By Northwest (1959) with Cary Grant starring. North By Northwest is actually somewhat of an American version of The Thirty-Nine Steps. Although the American film is one of the most acclaimed of the director's works, it is not even close to as entertaining or high quality as The Thirty-Nine Steps. Hitchcock based The Thirty-Nine Steps on a 1914 novel of the same name that Scottish author John Buchan wrote. Charles Bennett, Ian Hay, and Hitchcock adapted the book for the screen. The movie became hugely popular, both with critics and audiences, and also is responsible for helping to establish Hitchcock as a major director even to audiences in the United States, where he soon moved to work in Hollywood. Two remakes of the movie also exist, one in 1959 by director Ralph Thomas and the other by Don Sharp in 1978. The story takes place over four days and involves an ordinary man, which is the case with many of Hitchcock's films. Aside from the expected excellent camerawork in The Thirty-Nine Steps, by Bernard Knowles, the film also has numerous classic scenes, such as where Richard talks the milkman into allowing him to borrow his clothes so that he can escape out of his apartment early in the film, or any of the scenes where Pamela and Richard are handcuffed together. Their on-screen chemistry is excellent, leading to numerous funny and entertaining scenes. The blend of suspense with humor in The Thirty-Nine Steps is especially effective. In one instance, a supposed detective, actually one of Jordan's henchman, says to Pamela, "As long as you stay, he stays," speaking of Richard, who is currently handcuffed to her. As the detectives leave their car, Richard says to Pamela, "Yes, as long as I go, you go. Come on." The two of them leave immediately. Another great scene involves Jordan shooting Richard, who promptly falls to the ground. Richard did not realize that Jordan was the man Annabella was pursuing, but he sees quickly because of a physical deformity she described to him earlier. Jordan is missing part of his pinky, but by the time Richard notices, he is trapped and helpless. Nonetheless, the gunshot does not kill him. A hymn book he received earlier that he has in his jacket pocket at the time of the shooting blocks the bullet from harming him. An officer jokes with him, after Richard comes in to tell his story, "And this bullet stuck among the hymns, eh? Well, I'm not surprised, Mr. Hannay. Some of those hymns are terrible hard to get through." In nearly all of Hitchcock's films, blame is of central importance, or specifically an innocent protagonist under suspicion for crimes he did not commit. Richard fits the profile perfectly, though other elements of the film are also important, such as "the exchange." In the case of The Thirty-Nine Steps, the exchange is from Annabella to Richard, which occurs after her death when Richard removes a map of Scotland from her hand. Paranoia is nearly always an issue in Hitchcock's movies, though Annabella's paranoia is real, as Richard soon learns. Other elements of his filmmaking style evident in the film include his theatrical, anti-montage style and the high and low key lighting. The Thirty-Nine Steps remains a classic Hitchcock thriller well worth watching and truly masterful.
